Asia Pacific

It’s been a great start to 2013 building on a productive and successful 2012 for the WorldGBC Asia Pacific Network (APN).

Recently Malaysia GBC hosted the 2013 APN Network mid-year forum alongside the Eco-Building Workshop and Exhibition from 26 to 27 March 2013 in Kuala Lumpur. This forum was held in response to the request by the APN members during last year’s APN annual meeting on 11 October 2012 in Singapore for a biannual get together. The mid-year forum explored and assessed the priorities identified in 2012 as well as established new pursuits for the consideration of the member GBCs. Key areas of discussion included the following:

Government Focus:

• Strategies that were employed successfully by the regional GBCs in working with governments were shared and discussed. The working session allowed GBCs to share ideas and approaches that have made an impact in their respective countries including challenges and mitigation strategies to further strengthen government engagement locally.

GBC Growth and Development:

• GBCs in the Asia Pacific region need to play the crucial role of rolling out green building initiatives to the building sector while at the same time be perceived as a trusted partner by both the local industry bodies as well as the various governments. This session allowed APN members to share respective experiences to date and explored the best way forward collectively.

Green Building Rating Systems:

• The APN group collectively agreed that we must encourage the use of home-grown rating tools before the consideration of the use of foreign ones and to help APN members gain traction and be seen as relevant to the green building cause in their respective countries. To this end, an update and discussion into the draft Guiding Principle/Cooperative Framework for the cross border use of rating tools to be endorsed by APN members took place during this session with the aim of further simplifying it into an MOU type format and seeking final APN agreement by the end of the third quarter of 2013.

Data Collection and Sharing Platform:

• Malaysia GBC presented and discussed challenges concerned with the data sharing platform/methodology requirements regarding this initiative. Taking into consideration the latest developments that are available with regards to potential use of an existing online infrastructure platform such as the USGBC developed “Green Building Information Gateway” (, the group reviewed the platform live in the work session and agreed collectively to leverage the GBIG platform moving forward for this APN initiative to minimise duplication of efforts and maximise established platforms such as GBIG.

The 2013 Annual APN Forum will be held during World Green Building Week in Singapore at the International Green Building Conference (11 to 13 September 2013).

The WorldGBC Asia Pacific Network will continue to be an active platform where GBCs come together to learn from each other and explore opportunities for further regional collaboration to drive our collective mission of advocating for green building design, practices and technologies and drive environmental sustainability in the building and construction industry.
